Many Connects in Servermode --> 150 x Slowdown !?

Andreas Hahn
Hi, we have some trouble while using hsqldb in server-mode via network. Our
program is working fine and fast under mysql/innoDB. Now we want to switch,
server is working, command line shows all the connects and disconnects and
allways a second (!) of time between. Any suggestions what to check? Maybe a
problem with the jdbc-driver or any preference or properties? When we use
the internal-mode speed is normal. A connection-pool-manger could be the
solution but the code should run without, too. Normally the program needs 2
seconds for startup with filled forms from the db, now its about 2
minutes...

Help! :)

Limits 2/8 GB?

Andreas Hahn
Did I got it right that the max size for a single table is 2 GB and for a
complete DB 8 GB? Maybe we will need round about 15 GB of space for our DB
in ASCI (30 000 000 rs) and another amount for Gfx. Is ther a chance to
realise this with hsqldb or should we switch to another DB?

Re: Limits 2/8 GB?

For CACHED tables, the maximum is 8GB and can be just one table.

You can use two or more HSQLDB databases simultaneously, so extra data can
go into a second database.

In any case, HSQLDB cannot handle 15 GB in one database. You can use HXSQL
(http://hxsql.com) for larger datasets such as this.

Thanx again, perfect info.
I would like to use hxsql but we need one industrial server and maybe 100
clients and licences are not cheap enough - the project is for a poor land
in southamerica. So we try to use as much free soft as possible.

Please send me a separate email to discuss this. If you are saying there
will be one server with 100 JDBC clients, then you need just one server
license.

The code looks alright. However, there may be an issue with the network
configuration. You need to do some tests also with a connection to
//localhost  and to a simple (maybe empty) database to find out where the
problem is.

Hi Fred, network is ok but opening the DB takes to much time - no matter
what amount of data is inside. When we leave it open anything is allright.
Have to test some more...

Andrew Chandler
That is most likely because you're doing a simple shutdown.   This means
database housekeeping happens at startup.   You can change that to happening
at shutdown by executing "shutdown compact"  - its even worse if you are
ctrl-c killing your database

Re: Re: [Hsqldb-user] Many Connects in Servermode --> 150 x Slowdown !?

Fred Toussi-2
"SHUTDOWN COMPACT" is not a simple shutdown and takes much longer if you
have CACHED tables. This should not be used routinely in most cases. Use
plain "SHUTDOWN"
