Abnormal Behaviour due to improper shutdown...

Sudhakar-4
Due to abnormal shutdowns in one of our clients pc(OS win98), the Hsql Db is behaving strange. Even after restoring the database with old backups, it give similar problems on abnormal shutdown of PC. Can it be some Memory based error?.Below shows 2 text tables of the many tables were some junk data has got appended in the table. The first table showing some html being written at the end of  TEXT table file. The second table showing insert statements being added at the end of another  TEXT table.
FIRST TABLE :

We are using TEXT tables , the logic behind this being to store as much data as possible. Is this approach wrong? Also we use SHUTDOWN COMPACT to shutdown the Db everytime, as we cannot run this command once in a while to compress the data.

I think the culprit in Windows 98. As you know, HSQLDB does not use HTML,
and the OS is mixing up the file buffers.

In any case, TEXT tables are designed for special use, when data needs to be
shared with other apps. You can use CACHED tables, which can grow in total
to 8GB in the new version.

If the OS shows the same behaviour at abnormal shutdown and corrupts the end
of the .log file, then the data at the end is ignored. For your usage, you
should reduce the WRITE_DELAY parameter to 1 or less.

RE: Abnormal Behaviour due to improper shutdown...

William Krick
I've seen this problem before on some of our customer's machines.

Make sure that the computer in question has this patch from Microsoft
installed...

Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q273017/Def
ault.asp

Also, run scandisk and make sure there aren't problems with the FAT table
structure.
